Goodwin's Theory

The Script "Nothing" Music Video

Genre Conventions:

  • The Mise-en-scene is dark as the video was filmed at night. The low key lighting, the dark background all helps to represent a night out with the lads. Also the setting helps to show the simplicity if the artists as it is set in a small town rather than a big city with lots of lights and cars. This is typical of soft rock bands as their lyrics are usually about everyday life so that they can relate better to their audience.
  • The band members are wearing Simple Clothing, jeans tops and leather jackets (leather is typically used by rock singers as it represents strength and seriousness) which almost has a scruffy and cheap look. Their clothing are not at all flashy as the band members are not trying to show off their rich and glamorous lifestyles like in R&B and pop music videos, but they are trying to relate themselves most as possible to their target audience.
  • As in most rock videos or songs there are References to police. In this precise music video the audience doesn't actually see the police but the sirens are heard and seen towards the end of the video. As the target audience are adolescents/young adults tent to be quire rebellious at that age, the artists by showing their insubordinate side can relate better to the audience even though is a popular characteristic in rock music videos.
  • The Gloomy lyrics are emblematic of this genre of music as there is always a strong narrative usually about everyday life or love. I am smiling but I am dying trying not to drag my feet, this lyrics are sad and almost desperate, as the artists place lots of sentiment into their lines.
Relationship between lyrics and visuals:

  • The lyrics talk about the artists drinking at a local bar with his friends "As they take me to my local down the street" and in the visuals the audience are shown the artists sitting at a bar, drinking. They is referred to the other band members who take care of the main artist as he gets increasingly more drunk.

  • "Am I better off dead or am I better of a quitter" the artist asks himself this question at the begging of the song and after he has jumped into the water as if considering to drown himself (better off dead) or to be rescued and giving up on their relationship (better off a quitter). All these are shown throughout the video as the audience first sees him in the bar getting drunk and suicidal but then after the girl disappears in the water which was like a wake up call he decided to forget about the relationship and move on with his life; this is shown by the way he takes his jacket off and carries it on his shoulder whilst walking towards the camera like if he has now left his relationship behind his back and by walking towards the camera like if he is walking towards a new start.
  • In the lyrics the artists mentions a lot his friends "and my mates are all there trying to calm me down" showing that they play a big part in his life as they also do as band members, as friends do in everyone life, especially in their target audience. As his friends also are the ones that rescued him from the river this helps to strengthen the meaning of friendship almost as they are trying to educate their audience by teaching the importance of good companionship.
In conclusion I'll say that there is a strong relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as they both help each other out to explain the audience the concept and narrative in an easy and quick way.

Relationship between music and visuals:

  • As the artist gets more drunk, the pase of editing increase, as also the beat of the music, this helps the audience to be aware of the situation that is arising. Jump cuts are then shown more frequently as it shows the audience that the artists mind is not as bright as before and he is forgetting parts of his night, as it is a side effect of drinking. This makes the audience feel involved and vulnerable towards him but most of all it tries to explain to the audience that drinking is bad as it gets people in trouble.
  • As the artist jumps into the water, the beat of the music changes and the pase of editing also changes to suit it. As the beat of music slowly increases lots of jump cuts and flashbacks are shown making the audience aware of this pain and of the consequences of drinking alcohol.
Close-ups of artists and star image motif:
  • Close-ups of the artist were used in this video so that the audience can have a better insight of his emotions; pain and sorrow. This has helped the target demographic to know better the band as they feel more involved into his love story. This also helps to create a soft and kind image for the artists.
  • This video is not about the artists and their star motif but more about the concept of the song; this helps to build a relationship with the audience as they can easily relate to them, as they are on the same level. This also helps to give the words in the song a deeper meaning.
Reference to the notion of looking:
  • In this video there a reference to notion of looking as the camera was on the artists without them looking straight into it, without them knowing that there is an audience. This has help to create an insight of the artists night out, so that the audience feel as they know more than they should do, making them feel more involved and wanting to know more.
  • Although in some parts of the video, the band members look directly into the camera as they want to directly involve the audience in their everyday life experiences by making them feel part of the gang
Intertextual references:
  • In this video there are no intertexual references as the band doesn't want to show off their wealth and fame to the audience; they rather have an audience that can relate to them and than an audience that wants to be them and maybe develop jealousy towards them. They rather have an audience that appreciates them for their talent and their unique style.
Performance, narrative and concept:
  • This video is narrative based, as it has a strong storyline throughout the video and the lyrics. For this reason it was easy for the audience to understand the concept of the song as it was simple to imagine the visuals by just listening to the song.
  • In the music video the artists also performs as there are shots of the guitar and drum players and also some of the singer, performing directly to the camera towards the end of the video.
In conclusion in my music video,  I will include as many points of Goodwin's theory; I will include a strong link between my lyrics and the visuals supporting our body language and emotions, also helping to relate better to our audience. I would also like to make our music video narrative and concept based as it will help to show a greater understanding of the lyrics and it also works well with our convention of pop-dance.
By including notion of looking it will involve our audience into our life and emotions, as well as our style of living. This will also help the audience to learn more about our group and relate to us.

  1. You have a good start in explaining what Goodwin's music video is. You have identified the main points but you need to explain your points in more detail by referring to more examples from the video and this will enable your analysis to be more detailed. You also need to include images to support the points that you are making.

  2. The screenshots that you have included help to support your points well. You have also expanded on the points that you have made too, which now makes your analysis more detailed throughout.

Now aim to include a brief summary at the end of your post to explain how you will use Goodwin's theory within your own music video.
