Sub-Culture Theory
Sub-culture Theory
A sub-culture is a group of people who are united through a common value, system or taste of e.i. clothing, music, politics ect.
There are many sub-culture views such as conformity and rebellion which is were our chosen artist fits in. Other views are:
- Attitude to capitalism and consumerism
- Tribal/gang rivalry
- Traditional or 'neophyte'
The main three sub-culture theories are the CCCs, the Grant McCraken and Hebdige.
The CCCS which stands for the Contemporary Cultural studies, assumes that all sub-cultures come form on main culture as a reaction to the mainstream.
The Grant McCraken theory believes that the postmodern world is full of diversity, dynamism and creativity and he also states that if we look at the array of values, and ideologies then we can't say all sub-cultures come from other cultures.
Hebdige came to the conclusion that all sub-culture may appear different but if you look deeper you will notice that they are all the same as there is enough richness to warrant remaining "subcultures"as "little cultures".
