Independent Record Labels

Independent Record Labels
Independent record labels function on their own outside of the Major record labels, this is where many bands and artists start from.
Factory Records is based in Manchester and was founded in 1978 by Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus as a club.
They were later joined by Peter Saville, a designer and Martin Hannett a producer who helped to produce their first album in 1979 "Unknown Pleasure" performed by a band that played in their club Joy Division. They started running this company in an office in Alan Eramus apartment and slowly their success grew. Although all the success in the management of bands, the record label was closed down as it was declared bankrupted in November 1992.
Throughout the years they have managed many bands, of which the most popular were:

  • Happy Mondays
  • The Durutti Column
  • A Certain Radio

Irregular Records is a record label which focuses on folk music and was founded in 1985 by Robb Johnson who is also a singer. As well as publishing his own music Johnson, managed many other artists such as Barb Jungr, Des de Moor, Maggie Holland, Russell Churney.

The leaf Label was established in Yorkshire(UK) in 1994 by Tony Morley and Julian Carrera which focused on releasing electronic instrumental music, but now on electric artists and focuses on their live performances. Their debut was the 12" by Boymerang  in 1995; they also manage other artists like Icarus, Rob Ellis, Matthew Bourne, Witchman and many others.

Xtra Mile Recordings is an British established record label founded in 2003 by Charlie Caplowe which released rock singles and albums. They would badly affected by the August 2001 riots, when Sony Music warehouse was burn down as it stored their records. Their current artists are Beans on Toast, Crazy Arm, Fighting Function, Joshua English and many more.

Big record labels like Sony ME, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, in a music point of view are good for the music industry, as people with more experience as well as knowledge are involved in the production of songs. Also as they are big companies they can afford all the latest equipment, giving all their productions higher quality. It is also better for the artists as they can completely rely on their record labels to sell their products.
Although as the same people are in charged of the production stages, all the songs tend to sound similar and can become quite boring from an audience perspective. The "Big Three" labels also have a negative effect on the independent record labels making it harder for them to succeed, as when artists become more popular they tend to change for a small label to one of the major ones. This decreases their sales causing them to shut down as it happened to Factory Records.
Independent labels offer diversity and new styles of music, as not all are profit based, as their focus is succeding is their passion for and record releasing.
