Costumes
Costumes are very important in every music video as much as iconography, as they usually helping to define the genre of music and it's conventions, but in other cases, such as ours, it relates to the emotions felt by the artists as well as helping to portray them in a certain way.As in many pop-dance music videos, the artists change their clothing quite often, and for this reason as we still wanted to relate to the our genre convention, even in our music video, our artists will have some clothing changes.
The dresses which we will wear in this music video will convey to our dance conventions as they will be warn in a clubbing/ dancing scene which will represent our youth. The are chosen to glamour up our look and the music video itself to help with our representation of a girl band and girl power.
The dresses that we chose are not over-revealing as we still want to stick to our cosmopolitan look, giving the artists the representation of a "good band" as they are not portrayed as sexual objects but as a group of friends whom are enjoying life.
We have chosen to use casual everyday clothing to connote our simplicity, in order to relate to our target audience better. As each of us has decided to wear something different, as clothing are a very important in the portrayal of an individual. This helps to depict our individual personalities and styles in order for our demographic to relate to each one of us personally.
The black and blue jeans are very common way of casual dressing especially in young adults/ teenagers like us, as they are comfortable and can be stylish as they come in different styles for different people. For this reason jeans are very popular amongst the world.
In this music video we decided to use skinny jeans, as they are the most worn style by our chosen audience.

Selina's outfit includes a black vest top, in order for her to remain quite settle against the bright lights of the night. Blue jeans which will be worn by Selina as well as Ellie, are the more traditional colour and so we thought might be important to wear a set costume, whilst the black jeans portray more attitude and shows that as a girl band, we do not always follow tradition. We decided not to use co, colourful jeans as we thought might be important to have a co,our scheme so that we can look like a girl band but must of all follow the genre conventions; dark colours are more seen in dance music videos as they are usually based around the night.
Ellie will be wearing a grey top, in order to follow the rest of the colour scheme.
Jenna's outfit will not be following accurately the correct colour scheme as we will be giving her a cream top this has been chosen in order to break the complete black look, as a cream coloured top will brighten her up. Although we want the artist to blend in the background we don't want them to be totally camouflaged as being the main artist we still want them to be clearly visible in the music video.
This outfit which will be worn by Jessie, portrays her as simple and stylish. This will distinguish herself form the rest of the other group members as she will be the only one wearing a skirt and tights, whilst all the rest wear jeans or trousers.
Body-con skirts can be worn as casual as well as going out clothing depending on the shoes they are worn with. In this case the skirt will be warn with converse in order for it to be portrayed as simple and casual. Wearing skirts as a casual look has really become quite popular in young adults/teenage girls, as they can still look feminine and girlie even though looking for a more simple look.
We have chosen for Jessie as well as the rest of the girls to wear dark colours like grey, blacks and dark blues as it will help to associate with our genre and visuals in our music video; most of the video will be filming in the evening/night as we are trying to focus on life passing by which will be portrayed by lots of flashing lights which will be better seen in the dark. So we want our clothing to blend in with our surroundings as we do not want the artists to stand out by wearing bright colours as we would like our audiences to focus on the vicinity.
Jessie will be wearing a long sleeve blue top this matches with the blue strips in her skirt, which will then be topped with a blue and white scarf to create some edge as well as creating warmth.
To complete the look Jessie will be wearing a grey cardigan to ensure that all the colours are tied in somehow and also helped to create that casual look that we want her to be portraying This outfit will be matching the colours scheme that has been decided.
All of the girls worn UGGs during the filming process; this was for safety issues as snow had fallen. So due to the icy and cold weather, we had to wear shoes that would keep our feet warm and and the same time as they have quite a good grip help to prevent us from slipping and sliding, for our safety as well as for the protection of the equipment.
As for the cold conditions most of our clothing was not in show as we had to wear coats or jackets to keep us warm, but also in order to blend in with the rest of the people who were visible in our music video.
The different styles of coats also helped to add on to our individuality as each of us had a totally different style of jacket.
Selina and Ellie were wearing a grey fury jacket, which helped to portrayed them as having a comfy and coy personality. As the jacket is in fashion shows their as a stylish person but also helps to relate them to out target demographic, as they can look up to their similar style.
Jessie was wearing a black trench coat, this depicted her as a more sophisticated individual. The coat, also stylish defines her someone who cares about the way she looks, in order to inspire their target demographic.
Jenna instead was seen wearing different types of jackets: the first was a black leather jacket, which portrayed her as a strong personality. It also helped to depict her as someone who is not scared of standing out and go for something a bit different.
Her second choice was a long shall this showed her as elegant as it covered her until her knees. Her stylish jackets could be an inspiration to our target as we all have dressed in a mature way, which is most likely to appeal to them, as a young adult/teenager are usually going through the age of maturity.
These colours chosen for the coats still follow our main colour scheme, so black, grey and navy blue in order to blend the girls with the night and help the lights from the night shine through.
You have made a start in describing one costume of your music video, but you also need to consider the rest of your costumes too and the image that it will portray to an audience in further detail.
