Analysis of a magazine advert
In the smaller picture as she has her eyes closed it shows her as innocent and as her head is tilted could also show vulnerably, but it could also show sadness and isolation.
Her facial expression in both images connotes sorrow. This adverts connotes her as a diverse artist as she has transformed her image from the previous album Rated R. In Rated R she was connoted as if he was locked up and this advert it connotes liberty as she is positioned in a field. The name of the album LOUD and also the colour red which runs through both images, in contrast to her tanned skin colour, connotes that she is screaming as she wants to be seen and noticed as it relates to her pain.
The colour red connotes danger as well as love and sexuality. It also connotes her love to be dangerous relating it to her previous relationship with Chris Brown and now that she has lost it she feels lost and that is represented by her being in a field.
The background image looks like a still image taken from her music video although its layout it is very similar to her album cover design; Rihanna it is written across the top of the poster and across the bottom there is the date of which it will be released, rather than the album name.
The white typography is very simple and clear to read as it is in capitals throughout the poster; this is used in order to relate better to our target audience. There are no full sentences use din the advert as it only gives out straight instructions "out November 16th". The white promotes purity in contrast to the red which is not as prominent as the red from Rihanna's dress and hair.
The genre is represented due to the colour red lipstick which in R&B it connotes power as well as the jewellery which represents her fame and glamour. Her facial expression tells a narrative; this is a pop genre convention that the music videos are narrative based.
The audience is attracted by the colour which is eye-catching, but as Rihanna it is an established artist, the colour is now related so as you see the colour you automatically think of her. She also looks vulnerable and sad making the audience interested and noisy about her music as they want to learn more about her.

Her white clothing connote purity, whilst her red lipstick illustrates seduction and sexuality, and the black connotes that she is note as innocent, but has a rebellious personality. The glowing image and the blond hair portrays her as evangelistic and regal, as the diamonds connote her wealth.
The background image is a enlarged part of the artists album cover, which means that the colours run through both images. The only difference is the glowing effect that was added to the background image to make it stand out from the album cover on the left bottom corner of the poster. Also the text have the same gold/yellow in both images as well as the font. The layout of both images is quite similar as the text is at the bottom right corners.
The typography is not really clear as the only words that clearly stand out from the posts is the artist's name "Gwen Stefani" as it is written in a large font size, whilst the rest of the information is a lot smaller as some are even unreadable. The style of font is Gothic and antic with curly designs surrounding the first letters as it relates to the theme of Royalty. The style of writing is very simple as it just gives out straight instructions "Album in store now" rather than complete sentences.
The artist is promoted as seductive and attractive; she doesn't seem to be interest in her wealth as she is not holding properly the iconographic. This is because she is more interested in connoting sexuality.
The advert represents pop due to the use of colour and also as the image depicts a narrative which relates to both songs that are mentioned in the poster "Rich Girl" and "What are you waiting for".
The use of colour also attracts the audience, as it is not the usual pop poster but it is slightly alternative and different.
In conclusion I will state that by analysing these adverts I have learnt a lot about the layout of a real media text and how effective it can be. I have also learnt that the different fonts and styles of language helps to specifically target a segment of the audiences, as different people have different taste, making it harder for me to use certain aspects which will target the correct demographic.
I have also learnt that the use of colour it is also very important, as different colours can connote different emotions.
These two adverts have helped me with the planning of my own as I have found that a smaller scale album cover was present in both adverts and so decided to use it in mine too.
Other factors such as the simplicity of language and text make it easier for a younger target market as the it would be more clear to them.
You have made a start in analysing the two magazine adverts above and you have also considered the representation of the image well too.
